B-prepared members visit Poland

From 24.06.26 to 28.06.26, the B-prepared visited the city of Rowy on the Baltic Sea. We were hosted by the municipality of Ustka, Poland, and Sean Klein attended on behalf of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich.

The main event was the live drill at the coast. It was well organized and run by local volunteer organisations. We could observe closely how experts dealt with various scenarios related to the dangers that the Baltic Sea poses to its residents.

Apart from the drill, we visited a local event to represent B-prepared, where our partners had the opportunity to present VR-prepared to citizens. We also had very interesting discussions regarding the next steps and the finalisation of the project.

Overall, these days were very productive and enjoyable.

Thanks to Ustka for the excellent hosting, and to all partners for the constructive exchanges. It was great to see everyone again!

Vom 24.06.26 bis zum 28.06.26 besuchte B-prepared die Stadt Rowy an der Ostsee. Gastgeber war die Gemeinde Ustka in Polen, und Sean Klein nahm im Namen der Universität der Bundeswehr München teil.

Das Hauptereignis war die Live-Übung an der Küste. Sie war gut organisiert und wurde von lokalen Freiwilligenorganisationen durchgeführt. Wir konnten aus nächster Nähe beobachten, wie Expertinnen und Experten mit verschiedenen Szenarien im Zusammenhang mit den Gefahren umgingen, die die Ostsee für ihre Anwohnerinnen und Anwohner mit sich bringt.

Neben der Übung besuchten wir eine lokale Veranstaltung, um B-prepared zu vertreten. Dort hatten unsere Partner die Gelegenheit, VR-prepared den Bürgerinnen und Bürgern vorzustellen. Außerdem führten wir sehr interessante Gespräche über die nächsten Schritte und die Finalisierung des Projekts.

Insgesamt waren diese Tage sehr produktiv und angenehm.

Vielen Dank an Ustka für die hervorragende Gastfreundschaft und an alle Partner für den konstruktiven Austausch. Es war schön, alle wiederzusehen!

Sean Klein is a Research Associate and PhD student at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. He earned his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Würzburg, conducting his bachelor’s thesis at the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research. He pursued a master’s degree in Bioinformatics at the University of Tübingen and spent a year abroad at the Sapienza University of Rome. During his academic journey, he also gained international experience at universities in Bucharest, Stockholm, and Madrid.

Sean’s master’s thesis involved deep learning, explainable AI, and computer vision for biomarker detection in kidney cancer tissue images, in collaboration with the Hannover Medical School and the Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics. Since June 2024, he has been focused on enhancing the artificial intelligence of Non-Player Characters (NPCs) for more realistic training simulations in Serious Games, as part of the Horizon Europe project B-Prepared. His core research interests include imitation learning, reinforcement learning, and broader methods in machine learning related to learning from human behavior.

B-prepared PIP10 @ Norrköping 2026

From 13.01.26 to 15.01.26 the 10th PIP (Project Increment Planning) meeting for the B-prepared project took place in Norrköping. We were hosted by Linköping University (LiU). Sean Klein was there on behalf of University of the Bundeswehr Munich.

We had a productive time, and could align on priorities for the next quarter, review progress across work packages, and agree on the key milestones and deliverables for the coming months. Beyond the planning sessions, the discussions were a great chance to strengthen collaboration across partners and sharpen our shared roadmap.

During the General Assembly we could solve outstanding issues and reflect on our progress.

Vom 13.01.26 bis 15.01.26 fand in Norrköping das 10. PIP-Meeting (Project Increment Planning) des B-prepared-Projekts statt. Gastgeber war die Linköping University (LiU). Sean Klein nahm im Namen der Universität der Bundeswehr München teil.

Wir hatten eine produktive Zeit und konnten die Prioritäten für das nächste Quartal abstimmen, den Fortschritt in den Arbeitspaketen überprüfen sowie die wichtigsten Meilensteine und Deliverables für die kommenden Monate festlegen. Über die Planungssessions hinaus waren die Gespräche eine gute Gelegenheit, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Partnern zu stärken und unsere gemeinsame Roadmap weiter zu schärfen.

Während der General Assembly konnten wir offene Themen lösen und unsere Fortschritte reflektieren.

Besuch der Feuerwehr und Professorinnen an der UniBW

Es war uns eine Freude wichtige Gäste von der Feuerwache München (Florentin von Kaufmann, Andreas Boden, Bernhard Hirsch und Matthias Keller) sowie Prof. Annette Kluge von der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und Prof. Vera Hagemann von der Universität Bremen im Mission- und AI-Lab des Instituts für Flugsysteme (IFS) an der Universität der Bundeswehr München begrüßen zu dürfen.

Der Nachmittag war gefüllt mit interessanten Vorträgen und Demonstrationen über die aktuelle Forschung am IFS. Es gab anregende Diskussionen und einen freudigen Austausch. Vielen Dank für den Besuch und an alle die beteiligt waren!

B-prepared Hackathon in Budapest

The B-prepared Hackathon finals on the 19th of September 2025 were a great success. Our university was represented by Fridolin Spiegel, an aerospace engineering student in his bachelors, and by one of our researchers from the AI-Lab, Prakash Jamakatel. They both achieved the second place in the VR-prepared and IM-prepared challenges respectively. Congratulations!🎉

The team of Prakash, Kai Sommer and Björn Döschl worked on a game running in the browser both on Desktop and Mobile platforms. Their goal is to raise players’ awareness of the avalanche risks faced by skiers, snowboarders, and mountaineers in alpine regions. In the real world, persons are required to carry an avalanche transceiver. This is a small handheld device that emits and receives radio signals, allowing rescuers to quickly locate buried victims. The game guides through the process of using such a device to find such victims. We plan to integrate this game into B-prepared soon, stay tuned!

Meanwhile, Fridolin developed a game that trains laypeople to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and to call emergency medical services (EMS) within the game. This topic is crucial: most people rarely refresh their first-aid training, and very few have practiced making an emergency call before a real emergency occurs. Great work!

Fridolin will continue refining his prototype during his studies. Once it is complete, we will integrate our dialogue agent into his game to provide realistic simulations with professional call-takers.

Working Student - Software & Game Development and Artificial Intelligence

Join us in advancing AI-driven First-Aid Training!

As part of the EU-funded research project “B-prepared”, we are developing an AI-powered dialogue system to support civilians’ training in delivering first aid during emergencies. This entails developing a Dialogue Agent that closely follows emergency call protocols using natural language processing, machine learning, and symbolic artificial intelligence. Furthermore, a simulation environment will be developed for demonstration, data collection, and validation of the aforementioned agent.

We seek a motivated working student to join us and make a meaningful contribution.

Your Responsibilities:

Game Development in Unreal Engine 5 with and without Virtual Reality.
Data Science and machine learning on speech recordings and dialogue transcripts.
Dialogue agent Implementation, following the official guidelines of Bavarian First Responder organizations.
General project contributions, including research, testing, and documentation.

Your Profile:

Currently enrolled as a Bachelor’s or Master’s student.
Must be available to commit one year of employment.
Must be able to work on-site in Neubiberg
Programming experience in at least one programming language (Python, C++).
Basic knowledge of data science and potentially Machine learning.
Interest in learning about various areas of software development, ranging from User Interface Design to Backend Development.
German language skills are an advantage, but not required.
